Each August, the Red Cross Youth Leadership Development Camp takes place in Camp Pilgrim Pines, Yucaipa, CA.  This week-long camp focuses on helping youth develop leadership skills, understand the importance of community involvement, and experience Red Cross emergency training.

For the past several years, ICAN Associates has sponsored several students from middle schools and high schools across Los Angeles County.  Those chosen participate first as student leaders in training.  If they return the next year, they are eligible to become staff members.

The students are featured in the In Touch with ICAN Associates Newsletter.  They and other Red Cross Youth Leaders are invited to attend the Nexus Conference in October.

The camp usually serves over 100 Senior Camp Delegates and 30-40 Junior Camp Delegates.   There are about 55 Youth Staff plus Adult Staff.

For more information about the Red Cross Leadership Development, please contact Lakia Pearson, Director, Volunteer and Youth Services, American Red Cross, Greater Long Beach Chapter, at 562-490-4014 or pearsonla@usa.redcross.org.  Or, visit the website at www.thebigbeach.net.

The American Red Cross Youth Services is a multi-faceted program for youth 12 to 24 years of age. Offering many activities and courses for every age level, Red Cross Youth Services programs help build character and provide the tools and experience youth need for leadership, strong communication skills, and service.  By interacting with those in need, Red Cross youth volunteers establish a sense of awareness and personal achievement while developing skills.

The Greater Long Beach Chapter of the American Red Cross is home to one the nation’s most vigorous youth programs, now more than 800 volunteers strong. They encourage youth to participate in their health and safety courses, disaster services, international programs, and service projects.  Youth can make a difference through community service.  All of their service projects are free for the community and are offered to reach a wide range of ages and populations in the area.  Their programs are supported by the community for the community.

Are you or do you know a “natural leader” on campus?

We are looking for a few middle school and high school students to become leaders in preventing violence in schools and in the communities. These students may not be traditional leaders, but have natural leadership abilities.
